Check your digital accessibility

First choose whether you want to check a website or a PDF document. A website is checked from its address: EA Accessibility Scanner checks five pages and shows within a couple of minutes how many defects it finds and which types dominate. A document is uploaded as a PDF and checked against PDF/UA. The full report, with explanations in plain language, I send as a link and a PDF once you have given your name, company, email and phone. Then I call and offer a manual test of the website and the documents.

What do you want to check?

For example www.example.com. The check starts from the address you enter.

At most 25 MB. The file is deleted as soon as the check has finished.

How EA Accessibility Scanner works

What happens when I enter the address?

The scanner reads your sitemap and picks five pages that cover different templates: the front page, a page with a form, a deep content page and two other sections. If the website has no sitemap, it fetches the front page and four pages it links to. The pages are fetched the way an ordinary visitor does. It does not load your site and changes nothing.

What happens with an uploaded PDF?

The PDF is checked against PDF/UA, the standard for accessible PDFs, with the same checks the web accessibility law refers to for documents: is the document tagged, does it have a title and a language, do the images have alt text, do the tables have headers, are the fonts embedded, and more. The file is deleted as soon as the check has finished, and the report never contains text from the document.

Why only five pages?

The check is a sample, not a walkthrough of the whole website. Defects usually repeat across templates, so five well chosen pages show where you stand. The result also tells you how many pages the website has according to its sitemap. The whole website can be checked in a full report, which you can buy. What an automated check cannot see, I find in the manual test.

What does it check?

Every page goes through the checks that can be done automatically against WCAG 2.2 level A and AA: alt texts, contrast, labels on fields, headings, language, landmarks, links and buttons with names, zoom on mobile, and more than 60 others.

What do I see right away?

The number of findings split into must fix, should fix and manual review, the number of checks passed, and the three defect types that dominate.

What is in the full report?

Every defect type with its WCAG criterion, what the defect means for a user with a screen reader or a keyboard, how to fix it, and examples from your own pages. A section on the documents with the meaning of every finding and the fix at the source. Plus a table of the checked pages and a section on what an automated check cannot see.

How do I get the report?

Enter your name, company, email and phone under the result. All four fields are required, and the report cannot be obtained anonymously. The report arrives as a link in your email and can be downloaded as a PDF. The link works for 30 days.

What happens afterwards?

I call within two working days and talk the report through with you. It is a sales call: I offer a full report of the whole website and a manual test of the website and the documents with a plan for fixes, including your document templates. It is a paid service. Whether you go further is up to you.

How long does it take?

Usually one to two minutes. The page updates itself while the check runs.

What does it cost?

The check and the report cost nothing. In return I call and offer a manual test, which is paid. You are under no obligation to buy it.

What an automated check cannot see

An automated check finds some of the defects that hit users with a screen reader or a keyboard, but not all of them. It does not see whether alt texts say the right thing, whether the menu works without a mouse, whether focus lands in the right place, or whether form errors are announced. In a document it does not see whether the reading order makes sense or whether tables can be read cell by cell. I do. The report says what the check cannot see, so you know what a zero means, and what it does not mean.

Questions and answers

May I check a website or a document I do not own?

Only check websites and documents you own or are allowed to test. The scanner fetches the sitemap, robots.txt, and five pages once, like a browser does, but having permission is your responsibility.

What happens to my details and my file?

An uploaded PDF is deleted as soon as the check has finished, at the latest after ten minutes, and is not stored. The check result is kept for 7 days, the report for 30 days; it contains the document's name, page count and finding types, never text from the document. Name, company, email and phone are kept as an enquiry until I have spoken with you, and at most 24 months. You can always ask me to delete everything. See the privacy policy.

Why can I only check a website once a day?

To keep the check free and fast for everyone. If you need to check again after fixes, write to me.

Can you check pages behind a login or our intranet?

No. The scanner reaches public pages only. Pages behind a login I test manually. An internal document you can upload as a PDF.

Which documents can be checked?

PDF files of at most 25 MB that are not password protected. Word and PowerPoint files must be saved as PDF first. Very large documents get a basic check without the full PDF/UA validation.

Is a clean result the same as WCAG conformance?

No. An automated check covers part of the criteria. A conformance statement requires a manual test by someone who uses the assistive technology.

EA Accessibility Scanner: my automated check of five pages against WCAG 2.2 level A and AA, or of an uploaded PDF against PDF/UA.

What it does not check: whether the site and the documents actually work with a screen reader and a keyboard. Only a person can.

Time: usually one to two minutes. Free.

The report: the five pages explained clearly. Requires name, company, email and phone. I call, talk the report through and offer a manual test and a full report of the whole website.
